Job Description
The project aims at understanding how to systematically measure the impacts of architectural and code technical debt on different software qualities, meeting business targets, software developer productivity, etc. Moreover, we aim at identifying approaches to prioritize refactoring activities based on the impact that technical debt has on the aforementioned qualities and to identify approaches to present and visualize the impact of technical debt to the different stakeholders (sw developers, project managers, …).
The student will work in close collaboration with ABB teams that develop embedded software for various ABB industrial devices, with the possibility to be co-located and/or frequently visiting ABB sites.
The hired candidate is expected to work towards completion of an PhD degree under the supervision of Professor Davide Taibi (Tampere University) and Dr. Somayeh Malakuti (ABB).
We require:
A completed Master’s degree in a related field, e.g. Computer Science. Students near completion can also apply.
Good English skills (writing, speaking)
Good, if not excellent, object-oriented programming skills
Good knowledge of statistics and/or machine learning models, preferably applied to mining software repositories
Availability to travel to visit ABB sites, to present papers in international conferences.
Interest to do high quality research in collaboration with the software industry.
If selected to the position, you are expected to apply for post-graduate studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences Doctoral Program at Tampere University (unless already a PhD student at the university). More information on the admission process and requirements is available here. In case you are not already enrolled in the doctoral program at the time when the contract starts, your position will first be a Researcher position, which will be changed to a Doctoral Researcher position once you have been accepted to the doctoral program.
Candidates are selected based on the level of promise that they show, and this will be evaluated on the basis of their motivation letter, their previous success in their studies and merits in writing their thesis and / or scientific publishing.

The PhD student position is fixed-term for 4 years.
The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Doctoral Researcher is placed on level 2-4 of the job requirements scale. A typical starting salary for Doctoral Researchers is approximately 2400 EUR/month and it will increase during the studies depending on the progress (up to about 3000 EUR/month).A trial period of six (6) months applies to all our new employees.
