In collaboration with the QCAD group (Prof. Esa Räsänen), we studied the morphology of driven elastic interfaces in random media at the depinning threshold, and discovered a previously unidentified broken symmetry in their roughness. Application of detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) revealed that as a result, the traditional description of roughness of elastic interfaces in random media in terms of a single roughness exponent is incomplete. Instead, one needs to consider a full spectrum of local, segment level scaling exponents. The results were publishes in the prestigious journal Physical Review Letters. Congrats to Esko, Matti and Esa!
