Individual research grants including funding for salary costs
European Union, Horizon Europe: MSCA Post Doctoral Fellowship
For: PhD holder with maximum of eight years’ experience in research, from the date of the award of their PhD. Applicant can be of any nationality, but must not have resided in Finland for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the call deadline
How: The MSCA PF applicants applies the funding together with a Tampere University Supervisor. Tampere University Preaward-team organizes an online master class for the applicants.
What is funded: 100% funding from EU (max. 24 Months), for the MSCA PF salary, networking and research costs. NB! The budget for research costs such as consumables is limited.
When: MSCA PF grant can be applied once a year, DL in September.

Fullbright-Tampere Scholar Award
For: A candidate for the Fulbright-Tampere University Scholar Award should hold a Ph.D. degree and have some experience in teaching and research in their field. The candidate must be a U.S. citizen. Proposals for medical research involving clinical training, patient care or patient contact are not eligible.
How: Applicants are encouraged to contact the host department, faculty or research program to work together in designing the activities.
What is funded: Monthly grant for 3-10 months, travel allowance, residence permit, housing (by host)
When: Can be applied once a year: application period ends in September.

Tampere Institute for Advanced Study – Post Doctoral fellowship
For: PhD holders (doctoral certificate dated before the application closing date) from all scientific fields represented at Tampere University, doctoral degree completed no more than five (5) years ago.
What is funded: The Institute grants two-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (2025)
When: Can be applied once a year, application period in February-March

Tampere Institute for Advanced Study – Senior Research Fellowship
For: PhD holders from all scientific fields represented at Tampere University, doctoral degree completed no less than three (3) years ago.
What is funded: The Institute grants three-year Senior Research Fellowships (2025)
When: Can be applied once a year, application period in February-March

Research Council of Finland: Academy Research Fellow
For: Researchers of any nationality and any field of science, with 2-7 years of experience since completion of PhD. The Academy Research Fellowship is intended for a researcher who does not yet hold a permanent and senior research position.
How: Applicants must have a contact person from the host faculty and get a permission from the Dean to apply the funding to be hosted at Tampere University.
What is funded: Four-year funding, can cover applicant’s own salary, salary costs of possible research team and other research costs
When: Can be applied once a year: application period ends in January.

Mobility grants without salary costs
Erasmus+: Short term teacher or staff exchange
What: Erasmus+ (KA1) supports short term staff exchange of staff both at support services as well as teaching and research staff. The goal of the exchange must be the professional development of the person involved in it, training, the development of their own organisation, and the sharing of good practices and knowledge.
How: The applicants must check if their home institution is eligible for funding and apply the funding from their own home institution. The home institution of the person arriving via Erasmus+ to Tampere University is responsible for travel and accommodation costs.
What is funded: This is up to home institution, but normally the grant covers travel and associated costs based on predefined unit costs.
When: The applicants must Contact the international or Erasmus+ office of their home institution to find out if these opportunities are available.

European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU): Researcher Mobility Fund
What: The ECIU member Universities offer travel grants through the ECIU Researcher Mobility Fund (RMF) to support researcher exchanges and scientific visits between member institutions. The goal is to foster collaborative research, strengthen academic partnerships, and support professional development in research careers.
How: The applicants apply the funding from the home institution.
What is funded: The grant covers travel and associated costs. (max. 5000€)
When: The call for applications opens annually, usually in October

MSCA Staff exchange
What: The Staff Exchanges action funds short-term international and inter-sectoral exchanges of staff members involved in research and innovation activities of participating organisations. The aim is to develop sustainable collaborative projects between different organisations from the academic and non-academic sectors. Staff Exchanges projects can last up to four years. The grant funds the mobility of seconded staff members from one month to one year.
How: Staff Exchanges are open to international consortia of universities, research institutions, businesses, SMEs and other non-academic organisations.
What is funded: Seconded staff receives a travel allowance (for travel, accommodation, subsistence costs). In addition, funding is provided for the participating organisations for research, training and networking activities and management and indirect costs.
NB! The home organization pays the salary of the seconded staff during the secondment but receives no funding for the salary costs from MSCA.
