AI transformation at work: new book puts people at the center

AI Disruption at Work book cover

AI is reshaping working life across occupations and societies. Our new Palgrave Macmillan open-access book, AI Disruption at Work, examines this transformation through longitudinal and cross-national data, with a particular focus on how people adapt, cope, and maintain human agency and creativity.

The book by Atte Oksanen and Iina Savolainen draws on research conducted at Tampere University, including longitudinal studies that follow the same individuals over time and cross-national data covering 12 countries across six continents.

Rather than viewing AI transformation only as a technological change, the book focuses on workers’ experiences: emotions, professional identity, stress, self-efficacy, adaptation, and the conditions that support successful change.

A central message is that human creativity and agency remain crucial. AI can augment human capabilities, but people need to remain active authors of their work, judgment, and creative processes.

The book concludes with a roadmap for ethical and resilient working life in the age of AI, emphasizing human agency, meaningful work, responsible organizations, and socially sustainable AI transformation.
