Together with our colleagues in Vienna, Austria, and Ottawa, Canada, we were able to demonstrate that only three consecutive phase modulations of single photons are enough to perform quantum operations otherwise impossible. These so-called high-dimensional quantum gates might become important in future quantum information science schemes, such as quantum cryptography or computing.
