Industrial equipment and machinery manufacturing forms the foundation of the industrial sector in the European Union (EU), employing approximately 3 million individuals and serving as a crucial supplier to various related industries. To maintain its competitive advantage, the field of industrial manufacturing necessitates comprehensive solutions that encompass the entire life cycle of industrial equipment. Addressing this need, the AIDEAS project, funded by the EU, is currently engaged in the development of a suite of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to support this endeavor. The project’s primary focus revolves around four key elements: design, manufacturing, utilization, and repair/reuse/recycling. In order to validate and refine these proposed solutions, four pilot programs have been established, involving manufacturers who provide industrial equipment to sectors such as metal, stone, plastics, and food. Through the AIDEAS project, the EU aims to enhance the capabilities of industrial manufacturing through cutting-edge AI applications and drive sustainable growth in the sector.

Objectives

    1. To develop and share among the different consortium partners and other stakeholders the AIDEAS Project vision, establish the state of the art in terms of technologies for industrial equipment design, manufacturing use and repair/reuse/recycle, and to set the requirements driving the creation of AIDEAS Solutions.
    2. To design the AIDEAS Framework and deliver the Reference Architecture for smart manufacturing and devised using multiple perspectives, related to business, usage, functional and implementation viewpoints.
    3. To build the AIDEAS Industrial Equipment Design Suite, providing AI-assisted optimisation modules that generate design proposals for the construction of industrial equipment.
    4. To build the AIDEAS Industrial Equipment Manufacturing Suite, a set of AI technologies for the manufacturing phase of industrial equipment with the objective of achieving a high level of agility and sustainability between the manufacturing parties.
    5. To build the AIDEAS Industrial Equipment Use Suite, a set of AI technologies for the use of industrial equipment to be exploited by the companies that buy the machines.
    6. To build the AIDEAS Industrial Equipment Repair-Reuse-Recycle Suite, a set of AI technologies for the repair/reuse/recycle of industrial equipment to be used by the companies that perform such operations.
    7. To test and validate the AIDEAS Solutions in 4 use cases, machinery manufacturers covering different industrial sectors (metal, stone, plastic and food).
    8. To disseminate the AIDEAS Solutions, providing an outreach of the project activity and results, paving the way for broad adoption of AIDEAS Solutions in the industry. To create or contribute to standards, compliant with existent and evolving ICT standards, facilitating regulation and certification.
    9. To facilitate technology uptake and long-term adoption of the AIDEAS Solutions by the machinery manufacturing industry.
    10. To properly manage the project for guaranteeing that the project objectives are met by ensuring the successful completion of the project on resource, on quality and on time.

AIDEAS will be developing 4 suites and one Machine Passport as key exploitable results.

AIDEAS suites and Machine Passport

Impact

    1. TECHNOLOGICAL: Accelerating the adoption of AI technologies by machine manufacturers and machine-using companies, providing a greener and more flexible and efficient way of building industrial machinery.
    2. ECONOMIC: Increasing productivity, innovation capacity, resilience, sustainability, and global competitiveness of EU machinery manufacturing industries and the EU manufacturing companies, in particular, the ones considered to be energy-intensive: food, pulp and paper, basic chemicals, refining, iron and steel, nonferrous metals, and non-metallic minerals.
    3. SOCIETAL: Accelerating the green transition by providing AI technologies for the repair, reuse and recycling of machinery at the end of its first life, saving the CO2 emissions that new manufacturing would generate. Providing human workers (operate industrial machines) new levels of work efficiency, flexibility and safety, and learning and upgrading of skills, assisted by human-AI technologies, making their jobs more attractive.

Role of FAST-Lab.
