Lena Möbus starts as post doctoral researcher in health data science

In the autumn 2021, three post doctoral researchers were recruited within the University’s strategic profiling area funded by the Academy of Finland. Lena Möbus is one of them. She starts to work in Prof. Dario Greco’s group. Read what Lena tells about her research and background.

“Just arrived in Tampere a week ago, and I got a very warm welcome by my new team of the FHAIVE (Finnish Hub for Development and Validation of Integrated Approaches, Prof. Dario Greco’s group) and also by the university as well as HR services. My first impressions of Finland were great and I am very curious to explore Tampere and my new working environment.

After I obtained my bachelor’s degree in biotechnology in Hamburg and my master’s degree in medical life sciences in Kiel in Germany, I did my PhD at the Department of Dermatology at Kiel University Hospital. The focus of my work was to explore transcriptomic signatures of atopic dermatitis, which is one of the most common inflammatory skin diseases with a substantial impact on patients’ quality of life. Though I am a molecular biologist by training, I enjoyed diving into the computational analysis of omics data and the integrated analysis of molecular and clinical data. While working together with physicians at the clinic, I learned that the understanding of disease mechanisms and disease heterogeneity is not only a thrilling puzzle for a scientist, but that the obtained insights have potential for treatment decisions and new therapy approaches.

The development of advanced computational methods to explore chemical and drug mechanisms of action to contribute human health efforts like the FHAIVE is aiming at, in my opinion, has a pioneering role in conquering and effectively using the increasing amounts of health-related data in the future. I am glad to be part of the team, and I am looking forward to exciting projects. Beside of work, I am thrilled to explore Finland. As I enjoy being in nature, either on bike, hiking or on skates, I am sure that the next 2 years will be rich of new impressions and experiences.”
