In collaboration with Prof. Lasse Laurson’s Complex Systems Group, we studied the morphology of driven elastic interfaces in random media at the depinning threshold, and discovered a previously unidentified broken symmetry in their roughness. Application of detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) revealed that as a result, the traditional description of roughness of elastic interfaces in random media in terms of a single roughness exponent is incomplete. Instead, one needs to consider a full spectrum of local, segment level scaling exponents. The results were published in Physical Review Letters. Congrats Esko, Matti and Lasse!
