Ongoing Research Projects
CO-SECURE. Oikeudenmukainen yhteiskunta –roolipeli. Koneen Säätiö. 2018-19.
Hankkeen vastuullinen johtaja professori Sirpa Virta. Tutkijat Jarmo Rinne, Tiina Rättilä ja Minna Hokkanen.
Hankkeessa kehitetään rawlsilaista simulaatiota uudenlaisena, roolipelin ideaan perustuvana tutkimus- ja tiedonhankinnan menetelmänä. Simulaation avulla kokeillaan, miten eri taustoista tulevat ihmiset kykenevät neuvottelemaan yhteiskunnalle uudet säännöt (yhteiskuntasopimus) ja soveltamaan niitä kuvitteellisten ongelmien ja ristiriitojen ratkaisussa. Malli perustuu keskeisiltä osin John Rawlsin teoriaan oikeudenmukaisuudesta ‘reiluna menettelytapana’ tai prosessina (justice as fairness). Simulaatiomalli ja siihen sisältyvä Oikeudenmukainen yhteiskunta -roolipeli on kehitetty yhteistyössä Tampereen yliopiston Teatterityön tutkinto-ohjelman kanssa keväällä 2018.
NordSTEVA 2014-2019
NordSTEVA is funded through NordForsk’s multidisciplinary Nordic Societal Security research programme, which aims to develop new knowledge about issues that must be addressed to safeguard societal security in the Nordic countries and about how to promote recovery in the wake of a disturbance. Security comprises the ability of a society to sustain vital societal functions and secure populations’ life, health, needs and basic values under extraordinary stresses, known as crises. The programme addresses questions of vulnerabilities, resilience and capabilities for crisis management related to prevention, preparedness, response and recovery. The research funded by the programme should add value to work already done in the Nordic countries within Societal Security.
NordSTEVA was established in September 2014, and will last until the end of 2019. As of January 1st 2016 the scientific and administrative coordination of the project has been transferred to the partner in Copenhagen, CAST.
Past Research Projects
CO-RESONANCE seeked to understand the interface of individual and societal resilience in the context of comprehensive security in Finland. The project, funded by the Government’s analysis, assessment and research activities, produced a model for monitoring and assessing individual resilience capacities, particularly in the context of comprehensive security framework. It also provided an analysis of the links and interdependencies between various levels (individual, societal, national, and international) contributing to resilience capabilities, thereby supporting policy-development and various other stakeholders working within the field of societal security.
UNISECURITY – Safety and Security of the Personnel of Finnish Universities: Resilience, Situation Awareness and Preparedness to New Threats
The aim of the project was to map out the experiences, knowledge and needs of the university personnel regarding the management of new threats in the work community and work environment. Further, the project solicited to develop the situation awareness and preparedness to new threats in the Finnish universities. From the viewpoint of security and safety, the internal organizations of the universities and their relations to the operational environments are very complex. The purpose of this research project was to develop and support the safety of the work communities of universities and management of safety and security in universities.
Research Themes
Visual Security Studies
The RGSS houses an internationally recognized research environment on the visual study of security. As editors of the first volume on Visual Security Studies, Juha Vuori and Rune Saugmann are the core of this sub-discipline of international relations, and together with the other researchers in the RGSS they continue to push the boundary for what international relations can be. Vuori and Saugmann run the KONE-funded project ‘Colours of Security’, which combines research published in leading journals with artistic work being shown in galleries across Europe.
The visual security environment includes researchers from nearby institutions and faculties:
- Anni Kangas employs collaging in her work on international politics
- Frank Möller does visual peace studies over at TAPRI (https://research.tuni.fi/tapri/)
- Rune Saugmann is doing an AoF funded postdoc on how machine vision software understands security (https://machinevisionsecurity.tumblr.com/ )
- Saara Särmä employs collaging and memes in her work on international politics at COMET (https://research.uta.fi/comet-en/)
- Juha Vuori professes visual semiotics as professor international politics
