TURNS in numbers (2025)
Tampere Urban Research Network for Sustainability (TURNS) is one of Tampere University’s official research platforms. TURNS strengthens the activities of Tampere’s urban research community and enhances its impact and visibility both within the university and beyond. TURNS fulfills this mission by operating on multiple levels: it supports new research initiatives, promotes international mobility, and advances societal impact by providing funding opportunities for urban researchers at Tampere University. In addition, TURNS collaborates in international projects and organizes a variety of formal and informal events together with our research community and stakeholders.
TURNS seed funding 2025
We grant seed money for applying external funding, establishing multidisciplinary consortia, and for other ambitious scientific initiatives.

TURNS mobility funding 2025
We fund TAU urban researchers’ international networking and career-building with travel grants.
- 6 funded research visits to 11 institutions in 5 countries

TURNS research enrichment funding 2025
We support initiatives and art-science collaborations that increase societal impact and enrich existing research projects at Tampere University.
- 6 funded enrichment initiatives including at least 10 public events

TURNS Coordination team 2025
- 5 team members
This year our coordination group grew into 5 people: Panu Lehtovuori, Riina Lundman, Anna Koskinen, Juho Rajaniemi and Annika Annala. The coordination group is in charge of managing and realizing TURNS events and projects.

TURNS management group advices and guides the TURNS strategy, budget and events. The management group members come from 6 faculties:

- MET = Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology

TURNS activities and collaborations 2025
- 32 events, which equals to 0,6 events every week of the year.
Some of our main events in 2025 were, for instance:
- Radical Care for the City week: 170 participants from 21 countries
- Re-City Conference (part of the Radical Care week): 90 participants
- International PhD School: 15 participants from 9 countries + 4 mentors from 3 countries.
- INURA 2025 Conference: 45 participants from 9 countries
- Urban Resilience & AI Symposium: c. 70 participants
- TURNS collaboration with Tampere Film Festival: c. 80 participants
- Tampere Urban Thesis Market: c. 300 of visitors and 16 tables.
