Workshop

The workshop is developed out of a project planning on ‘Community Literacy and Education for Wellbeing Society: A Finnish-Indian Joint Course on Urban Sustainability and Wellbeing’, funded by Tampere Urban Research Network for Sustainability (TURNS).

The course focuses on urban sustainability and human and ecological wellbeing, drawing on Professor Hannu L. T. Heikkinen’s (University of Jyväskylä) framework of education for planetary well-being and eco-social sustainability. Session 1 will deliberate and discuss on the following themes, which are also outlined as modules in the syllabus, amidst the faculty and students of PDUAMT.

(i) conceptual foundations of eco-social wellbeing and community literacy in urban contexts, wherein terms such as ‘well-being’, ‘eco-social’, ‘literacy’, what it means to be a community and so on are deconstructed and contextualised in the global north and global south.

(ii) (ii) comparative case studies of sustainability transitions in a Nordic welfare society and a rural, post-colonial region in Northeast India, wherein specific cases of sustainability success are demonstrated to understand the varied experiences of sustainability in both contexts.

(iii) (iii) participatory and pedagogical methods for community-embedded sustainability action, wherein feasible steps to promote community-led sustainability actions in future.

The workshop shall end with the keynote address in Session 2, delivered by Tuuli Hirvilammi from Tampere University, followed by a brief Q&A session moderated.
