The Dutch Experience
Dense and highly developed, the Netherlands has been one of the leading countries for sustainable urbanism, integrative landscape approaches, water management, radical architecture, urban activism and inclusive social practices.
TURNS Thursday invites everyone to join to discuss the most recent Dutch experiences, for example the increasing acuteness of “vertical urbanism” that addresses the huge importance of bedrock, soil and underground infrastructures as a situated condition for sustainable urban process.
Our guide is architect Sebastiaan Veldhuisen, who has broad knowledge from education, businesses and own practice. The event will involve discussion on the role and future of education, both academic degree curricula and continued professional modules, learning from Sebastiaan’s experience in TU Delft and Tilburg.

Sebastiaan Veldhuisen is a practicing architect and founder of Rebel Architects in the Netherlands. His design projects include sustainable and modular housing, as well as adaptive reuse of industrial heritage sites, schools and churches for a mixed housing and cultural program. Sebastiaan has an extensive experience as innovating entrepreneur and consultant. Sustainability is at the core of his work: in buildings, urban design, and building products. As architect he pioneered in the early 2000s with bio-based materials, natural water sanitation and non-fossil fuelled heating systems, like self-developed and built low-temperature furniture and mass stoves (Bergkachel). As consultant for urban development he collaborated with integrated design teams on climate adaptation, ecology and regenerative energy solutions. For the building material industry he contributed to zero energy building concepts at ROCKWOOL, timber modular building systems at Sustainer and Respace, as well as BIM solutions for product performance. Next to his professional activities, Sebastiaan Veldhuisen is involved in academic education in the Netherlands and abroad. Currently, he lectures at the TU Delft and Masters of Architecture and Urbanism at Fontys Tilburg.
