Urban Physics Walk

Measuring wind and sound

Urban physics research group together with TURNS organized an Urban Physics Walk in MayA guided walk through the Tampere city centre revealed how the built environment influences urban microclimates and environmental phenomena, which in turn can impact upon our health, wellbeing, emotions, and energy consumption. During the walk, participants were abled to use a range of instruments to measure environmental variables such as temperatures of different surfaces, various air pollutants, noise, light, and wind, and learn how these are influenced by urban design. In doing so, the Urban Physics Walk helped the participants understand the conditions of the physical city and its various elements and exposures, and learned how these (e.g. noise, light, heat) can have a disproportionate impact on more sensitive and vulnerable individuals.
