Doctoral dissertation: Target Tracking Using Optical Markers for Remote Handling in ITER by Laura Gonçalves Ribeiro

MSc Laura Gonçalves Ribeiro’s doctoral dissertation, entitled “Target Tracking Using Optical Markers for Remote Handling in ITER”, will be publicly examined on Friday, 2 June 2023, at Tampere University.

Laura Gonçalves Ribeiro

In her thesis, Gonçalves Ribeiro investigates the challenges of remote operations in safety-critical nuclear fusion environments and proposes machine vision solutions to enhance operators’ situational awareness. The research focuses on designing robust optical markers and a detection pipeline to accurately extract the pose of operational targets in ITER’s experimental nuclear reactor. The findings contribute to improving the accuracy and reliability of remote maintenance tasks in confined and hazardous environments.

The defence will take place in auditorium TB109 of the Tietotalo building, starting at 12 o’clock. The opponents will be Professor Sven Lončarić from the University of Zagreb, Croatia, and Dr. Grégory Dubus from Fusion for Energy, Spain. The Custos will be Professor Atanas Gotchev from Tampere University. The thesis is co-supervised by Dr. Sari Peltonen.
