From Light to Space

“From light to space” material research

Project description
In spring and early summer 2008, I will examine and document the interaction between light, colour, substance and space in the facilities of the Centre for Practise as Research in Theatre. The results and photo material received will be used as part of the material for the book with the working title “From light to space” that can be used in teaching and as a data source for professionals in the future. The material will be entered into a format that is understandable without any special competence related to lighting.

I do not aim at using the research to create a material guide presenting how different materials and colours behave in light or using my book to create a lighting guide. The latter ones are already available in abundance. Because the problems of light, colour, substance and space are so complex and the practical conditions and goals are constantly changing, a ‘material guide’ would not make much sense. Instead, I will identify and illustrate such phenomena related to the interaction of light and substance that are significant in artistic work with regard to expressions, contents and aesthetics.

I have though about writing a book for a long time. The idea has originated from my interest in the research topic and investigative work methods related to light design that awoke at the end of 1980s as well as my 20-year part-time teaching job related to light. The book will mainly be written by means of the one-year grant. Material research will be carried out in cooperation with the Centre for Practise as Research in Theatre of the University of Tampere and the Competence Centre for Art and Communications of the Tampere University of Applied Sciences.
