Project objectives in brief
In autumn 2007, the Plugged-in Acerbi research project was started in Tampere in the Centre of Practice as Research in Theatre together with the degree programme in music of the Pirkanmaa University of Applied Sciences (PIRAMK). The project uses art to study new methods and viewpoints of combining music with text, language, speech, sound (human, instrumental, environmental or synthetic sounds) and space in the form of a collective production using sound and network technologies.
Makers
The project is carried out by a group of composition and music technology students and musician students from PIRAMK’s degree programme in music and the Verona Conservatory under the guidance of composition and music technology teachers.
Working methods
The ideas and materials to be worked with using the platform established in a network are common to all participating in the project. The objective is to create a truly collective joint work, instead of a series of separate compositions by individual composers. In addition to independent network performances, the ideas and materials are worked with in workshops in Tampere and Verona.
The starting point of the work is a text extract from Giuseppe Acerbi’s book Travel through Finland (1799, Finnish and Italian translations are used in addition to the English original). Acerbi spent his childhood in Verona, Northern Italy, and he made extensive explorations in the Nordic Countries in 1798-1799 and describes these travels in his book. The cultural clash dating back two centuries is now being reinterpreted from the 21st century Finnish and Italian points of view using art and technology.
