Ville Kankainen’s doctoral dissertation Hybrid Play Experience and Design in Tabletop Gaming will be publicly examined at Tampere University’s Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences on Friday, 21 February 2025, at 12:00 in Pinni B (auditorium B1096, Kanslerinrinne 1, Tampere).

Associate Professor Souvik Mukherjee (Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta, India) will serve as the opponent, and Senior Research Fellow Thomas Apperley (Tampere University) will act as the custos.

In his dissertation, Kankainen explores how hybrid play experiences and design are shaping the future of tabletop gaming. The research investigates how digital elements integrate with traditional tabletop games, offering new forms of interaction and engagement. The study contributes to understanding the evolving landscape of play and game design in hybrid formats, combining physical and digital dimensions.
