Community Engagement for Urban Resilience through AI and Other Emerging Technologies

Professor Kaisa Väänänen is opening the symposium with an introductory presentation.

What kind of resilience issues are cities facing today? Who are the actors involved, and how can new technologies, including AI, be used to improve resilience in cities? These topics were discussed at the Urban Resilience Symposium at Tampere University in August 2025.

Together with Tampere University’s TURNS research platform and in collaboration with city of Tampere, we hosted a half-day symposium exploring the intersection of urban resilience, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies. The event brought together a diverse group of researchers, city representatives, and industrial actors with a shared goal: to examine how technology can support communities in anticipating and adapting to the disruptions that increasingly challenge urban life. According to participants, the event provided inspiration, interesting cross-disciplinary perspectives and discussions, and fresh ideas for their own work.
