On 18 October, Nelli Piattoeva gave a public lecture at the University of Vienna’s Institute of Education, upon the invitation of professor Daniel Tröhler. The lecture, based on her doctoral research, was titled “Citizenship education, Nationhood and Identity. Object lessons from post-Cold War Finland and Russia”.
The lecture problematized the link between modern state-led education systems and the processes of nation and state building. It had a historical focus, particularly in the period after the end of the Cold War, when both Finland and Russia had to re-think the notions of citizenship and national identity.
Nelli Piattoeva is a visiting scholar at the Centre for Comparative and International Education, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin for the academic year 2017-18.
