Nelli Piattoeva published a chapter “Doing equality through greater transparency? Troubling surveillance expansion in the Russian school system” in an edited collection by Steve Carney and Michele Schweisfurth “Equity in and through education: Changing contexts, consequences, and contestations”. The collection brought together papers presented at the Comparative Education Society in Europe (CESE) conference held in Glasgow in 2016. Nelli’s chapter looks at the spread of national testing in Russia from the perspective of both equality and surveillance, showing how the seemingly benign discourse of equality that accompanies the spread of testing also helps to introduce more intrusive practices of surveillance into education.
