Mika Hietanen (docent in rhetoric) from Lund University will be a guest at the EduLit meeting on 16.10.2023. His expertise lies in rhetoric and argumentation, and the theme of our monthly meeting is argument literacy. Mika Hietanen collaborates with our researcher, Annika Svedholm-Häkkinen (University of Helsinki). Together, Mika and Annika develop methods to measure individuals’ ability to understand authentic arguments, i.e., arguments that occur in everyday life. The researchers are currently piloting the “Argumentation in Context Literacy” test. Their studies aim to deepen our understanding of the cognitive processes involved in argument evaluation. The studies will also explore upper-secondary students’ challenges in argument literacy.
