Jarmo Peltola's research projects

The population of the city of Tampere and the interaction and social segregation of the city and the surrounding countryside. The database provides an opportunity to focus on the differences between local and general changes from the pre-industrial period to industrialisation (1800-1856, 1857-1890 and 1890-1920). This is also linked to the ongoing Finlayson project.

Through the population of Tampere and the surrounding area, Peltola studies in particular the so-called Urban Penalty phenomenon. In an industrialised city, the mortality rate rises higher than in the surrounding areas, but it soon decreases because of improved living standards, health care and hygiene.
In particular, the phenomenon is examined through the city districts, combining demographic history and analysis of the population’s living standards. In this project, we are going to write two international articles with Sakari Saaritsa.

Research on the impact of climate on mortality in Pirkanmaa in 1750-1920. The mortality data is collected in the University of Tampere. The study is to be conducted together with Samuli Helama and Sakari Saaritsa. The project involves international co-operation with Barbara Schumann and Lena Karlsson, who work with the same theme and similar data at Umeå University.

When writing the history of Satakunta, Peltola created a database of the area’s crop production statistics. Based on preliminary analyses, there were considerable differences in the crops between the various towns in Satakunta. In the region, there were towns whose harvest was repeatedly below average. Peltola intends to make 1) a regional analysis of the relationship between harvest and mortality and 2) is using the database created by this project to study mortality in the region and within the regions to study social inequality.
