Autoimmune Diseases and Oral Health: 30-Year Follow-Up of a Swedish Cohort
Oral infections up-regulate a number of systemic inflammatory reactions that, in turn, play a role in the development of systemic diseases. We investigated the association between oral health and autoimmune diseases in a cohort of Swedish adults. Hypothesis was that poor oral health associates with incidence of autoimmune diseases. Overall 1676 subjects aged 30-40 years old from Stockholm County (Sweden) participated in this study in 1985. Subjects were randomly selected from the registry file... -
A Competition between Care Teams Improved Recording of Diagnoses in Primary Dental Care: A Longitudinal Follow-Up Study

Finnish Dentists Find Smoking Cessation Important but Seldom Offer Practical Support for Their Patients
CONCLUSION: Although smoking cessation is discussed with patients, dentists are less active in taking concrete actions to support the patient on withdrawal. Adherence to the local treatment guideline was associated with better capabilities in dealing with tobacco withdrawal and a more active role in smoking cessation. The results suggest that more education on the local smoking cessation treatment guideline and cessation intervention is needed in order to overcome the remaining barriers to... -
Periodontal Initial Radiological Findings of Genetically Predisposed Finnish Adolescents
CONCLUSION: Only TLR4 (rs498670) and TNFSF11 (rs2277438) genes were found to have a positive correlation with radiological findings suggestive of initial periodontitis after adjustment for smoking and visible plaque. -

Salivary Diagnostics-Point-of-Care diagnostics of MMP-8 in dentistry and medicine
Human saliva is an easily accessible biological fluid and contains a variety of disease-related biomarkers, which makes it a potential diagnostic medium. The clinical use of salivary/oral fluid biomarkers to identify oral and systemic conditions requires the development of non-invasive screening and diagnostic technologies, and is among the main goals of oral fluid researchers. The analysis of the disease-specific oral and systemic biomarkers in saliva and oral fluids (i.e., mouth-rinse,... -
Pilot Study on the Genetic Background of an Active Matrix Metalloproteinase-8 Test in Finnish Adolescents

Inflammatory mediator polymorphisms associate with initial periodontitis in adolescents
Several studies have addressed cytokine gene polymorphisms and their possible associations with periodontitis. We examined the association between salivary anti- and pro-inflammatory mediator polymorphisms and initial periodontitis in Finnish adolescents, taking into account the effect of smoking. Salivary samples of 93 clinically examined adolescents from Eastern Finland were analyzed. Their oral health and smoking habits were recorded. Periodontal probing depth (PPD), and bleeding on probing... -

Tobacco, snuff and oral health
Smoking is estimated to cause 6.3 million deaths annually worldwide. The use of snuff, differing from smoking, has significantly increased especially among the adolescents. Snuff powder contains 20-fold more nicotine compared to cigarettes, leading to strong nicotine addiction. In addition to cancer development, both smoking and snuff use exert other risks for oral health. Compared with non-smokers, smokers are at a 10-fold risk for the development and progression of periodontal diseases. Snuff... -
Financial team incentives improved recording of diagnoses in primary care: a quasi-experimental longitudinal follow-up study with controls
CONCLUSION: Group bonuses may provide a method to alter clinical practices in primary care. However, sustainability of these interventions may diminish after ceasing this type of financial incentive. -

Current treatment of endometriosis
Early diagnosis of endometriosis is important for proper planning of the treatment. First-line treatment of moderate endometriosis is hormonal drug therapy, which should be long-standing. Surgery is needed, if pain symptoms cannot be controlled with medication. For patients with severe endometriosis, surgical treatment is often the first-line therapy. Complete elimination of the foci of endometriosis is attempted already at the first time. More than half of endometriosis patients will get... -
Menopausal hormone therapy--benefits, adverse reactions, concerns and information sources in 2009
CONCLUSIONS: Women using HT need more information about the risks of HT from their physician. This is especially important for women who are not able to manage the symptoms without HT, but have tried or considered discontinuation and for vaginal HT users. -
