The Immunopharmacology Research Group >>

Head of the research group:

Professor Eeva Moilanen, MD, PhD

Research interests:
new-1.jpg
The Immunopharmacology Research Group has focused its research (for more than 10 years) on regulation of inflammatory genes in arthritis, asthma and obesity. Our research interests cover immunopharmacology: inflammation, cellular mechanisms, anti-inflammatory drugs, novel drug targets, biomarkers and applications in diagnostics. The goal is drug development by means of testing novel drugs and compounds, finding new targets for drug research and finding ways to improve existing treatments.

  • Regulation of inflammatory response and inflammatory gene expression, MAP kinase / phosphatase pathways, nitric oxide and eicosanoids, macrophage and T cell-derived cytokines in inflammatory lung diseases, allergy, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
  • Regulation of eosinophil activation and apoptosis in asthma and allergy
  • Exhaled nitric oxide and breathe condensate in the measurement of lung inflammation, diagnostic applications and in the follow-up of anti-inflammatory treatment
  • Adipokines and their role as effectors, regulators and biomarkers in inflammation
  • TRPA1 in inflammation and inflammatory pain
  • Drug-releasing biomaterials

Responsibilities:

– The supervisors should inform TBDP about the dissertations.

– The progress of PhD projects should be followed by 1) yearly progress reports and 2) the meetings of the supervisory board.

– Supervision agreement should be signed by both the student and the supervisor(s).

Travel costs:

– Travel costs to TBDP annual meeting will be covered to all TBDP students.

– Students needs to fill in the application for authorization of travel costs (virkamatkaesitys) for the host university before the trip. Only by this way the travel insurance will be valid!

– No daily allowances or use of own car will be covered.

For more detailed information look at TBDP Handbook!

Some important things to remember:

1) Progress reports need to be submitted each year. This is requested from EVERY student (also from those doing research only part-time).

2) Supervisory board (ohjausryhmä). Every student in TBDP should have a supervisory board and arrange a meeting with the board at least once a year. Memo from the meeting is a part of annual progress report.

3) Supervisory agreement In addition, TBDP students and supervisors are requested to sign a Supervision Agreement Form and send it by regular mail to coordinator.

4) Submission of a student card After you have been accepted as a new TBDP student member please fill in the student card . Please save filled copy as pdf-file and send it to the Coordinator by Email or print it out and send it by regular mail. Thank you!

5) Participation in TBDP annnual meeting and courses (Travel Grant Application) . Every TBDP student should participate in the Annual TBDP Meeting (irrespective of salary status). There you will receive feedback about your oral presentation and progress. TBDP will cover the travel expenses to TBDP meeting (within Finland).

Applying to TBDP:

TBDP call for paid student positions is closed.

Additional Information

For more detailed information check out the TBDP Handbook!

BoneJ

BoneJ is a plugin for bone image analysis, which provides free, open source tools for trabecular geometry and whole bone shape analysis. The webpage and more information can be found here. Dr. Timo Rantalainen, who graduated from TBDP program 2010, has created plugin which performs regional bone mineral density calculations. This may be useful tool for many of the PhD students in TBDP. Cortical bone analysis, made by Dr. Rantalainen can be found here
