About

The Department of Radiology at Tampere University provides a comprehensive and integrated diagnostic radiology curriculum to medical students, an award-winning residency program for medical doctors, subspecialty fellowship programs for radiologists, and high-quality scientific research that encompasses all major subspecialties in diagnostic radiology.

We have a wide spectrum of active research interests on various topics, including emergency radiology, oncological imaging, breast imaging, dental and maxillofacial imaging, and artificial intelligence (AI). See Publications and People for more details.

We work in close collaboration with the Imaging Services of the Tampere University Hospital (Tays) and affiliated hospitals.

We are proud to provide a certified and structured residency program in diagnostic radiology. Our residency program has been awarded a European quality certificate (Gold Certificate of Excellence), currently the only certified radiology residency program in Finland. The European Board of Radiology (EBR), which is the training division of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), acted as the European auditor of the training curriculum.

The European Training Assessment Program 2.0 (ETAP2.0) evaluates the theoretical and practical content of specialist training comprehensively, including professional, scientific, pedagogical, and administrative perspectives. Attention was paid to current themes, such as continuous evaluation of professional competence, the role of information technology and artificial intelligence in radiology, and management training. According to the evaluation, our residency program fully meets the educational quality requirements of the European Board of Radiology. The strengths of the program included modern and versatile case material, excellent consultation opportunities, a good working atmosphere, and participation in international meetings.

Today, radiology is international. Our Gold Certificate of Excellence ensures close connections with European education standards and helps to further develop radiology residency training in Finland.
