Eastern Memories is a story of Finnish linguist G. J. Ramstedt and his journey into the age-old world of beliefs and traditions of the late 19th and early 20th century, a world that is today replaced by progress and pragmatism. It is an adventure that takes us to Mongolia and Japan of the past and the present. The story brings together parallel realities; a bygone world; the transitory times of today; the transformed traditions from the past; nature and cities; the conflict between loneliness and a sense of obligation. Ramstedt is our witness of the past and our mirror into the present.
TURNS invites you to participate in a short discussion on the themes emerging from the film. The film has several references to urban development and change, showing the traditional way of living with the current condition. The conversation will focus on the question whether beliefs and traditions are necessary for sustainable living.
Eastern Memories has been touring the international film festival circuit since its premiere in January 2018. The film has been seen at festivals in Copenhagen, New York, Seattle, München, Cambridge, Warsaw, Krakow, Brussels, Monterrey, Cartagena, São Paulo and Kathmandu, to name a few. The film has won several awards and continues to travel around the world. It has been broadcasted by the Finnish national public broadcaster YLE. The film also had cinema distribution in Mongolia.
