TURNS Knitting for Climate Researcher Talks continues the series of public research discussions introduced in the TURNS+STUE Urban Picnic this May. The aim is to get together in some public or semi-public space, give informal speeches and discuss together the issues around sustainable cities and planetary well-being. This time, we do this in a sewing circle known as the Knitting for Climate.
Researcher talks during Knitting for Climate
- Riina Lundman: History of craftivism and presenting the concept of Knitting for Climate
- Vilhelmiina Vainikka: More empathic, intersectional encounters in urban youth climate activism and schools
What is Knitting for Climate?
Knitting for Climate is a social movement of people using the art of knitting to express their concern over climate change and the inadequate political response to it.
The idea is to knit a red scarf with the measurements of 15 cm X 1,5 m. You can keep the scarf to yourself, give it to someone as a present, put it on a public statue, or – as the original idea is – send it to a politician.
Knitting for Climate can be done anywhere, at home, public spaces, cafes, libraries, lecture halls, online meetings… It is a sign that we care for the climate and our planet.
