The Urban Physics Walk is a guided walk through the Tampere city centre that reveals how the built environment influences urban microclimates and environmental phenomena, which in turn can impact upon our health, wellbeing, emotions, and energy consumption. During the walk, participants will use a range of instruments to measure environmental variables such as temperatures of different surfaces, various air pollutants, noise, light, and wind, and learn how these are influenced by urban design. In doing so, the Urban Physics Walk helps us understand the conditions of the physical city and its various elements and exposures, and learn how these (e.g. noise, light, heat) can have a disproportionate impact on more sensitive and vulnerable individuals.
The Urban Physics Walk is organized by Anna-Kaisa Viitanen and Jonathon Taylor from the Urban Physics Research Group. During the walk, Riina Lundman will talk about the walking interviews she has made with neurodivergent people in Tampere and links the issue with the topic of a more neurodiverse city.
After the walk, coffee and/or other refreshments will be served in the city centre.
Organizers:
- Anna-Kaisa Viitanen, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Tampere University
- Jonathon Taylor, Associate Professor (tenure track), Tampere University
- Riina Lundman, Project Manager, Tampere University

Please, sign up for the walk by 29th of April so the organizers can prepare the needed instruments in advance. > Unfortunately the registration needed to be closed before the deadline due to the great interest in the event. Apologies for the inconvenience!
