Energy Policy

The Energy Policy group is part of the Politics/IR unit at the Faculty for Business and Management under the leadership of CNESS Lead PI Jean Monnet Professor Pami Aalto. The group’s research staff addresses the politics and policy problems of energy transitions on several levels ranging from the civil society and on to the changing international order as electrifying energy systems become more interconnected. Embracing an interdisciplinary approach, the group also values close cooperation with stakeholders in the public, NGO and private sectors, contributing to policymaking, media debate and also being available for consulting work.

Recent research focuses on four main topics:
  • EU & Northern European energy policies (including the Arctic & Russia)
  • Comparative study of energy transitions & stakeholders
  • Energy policy & environmental governance (particularly black carbon)
  • The international dimensions of electrification
The group has expertise in various renewable energy sources, nuclear power and fossil fuels and is developing an interest in hydrogen/P2X solutions. In addition, the group works on new approaches to energy policy research such as the structuration approach, contributing to institutionalist and international relations literature, as well as and seeking to build paths for an interdisciplinary synthesis in energy research such as CNESS. The overall aim is to find solutions applicable to the ongoing energy transition for Finland, the Nordics and beyond.

Ongoing projects:
2IMatch (2023-)
EL-TRAN (2015-2021)
BFfp – BC Footprint (2019-2022)

Furthermore, many research group members have joined projects with other universities (e.g., NTNU Trondheim, LUT University, University of Southern Denmark, and Hokkaido University). Please get in touch with the relevant researcher for more information.
