CNESS call June 2023: seed-in projects, data acquisition & mobility

The TAU research platform Climate Neutral Energy Systems and Society (CNESS) issues a call for seed-in projects, data acquisition & mobility (including both incoming and outgoing research visits).
s
Seed-in-projects:
These projects can provide seed funding for a planned project; comprise pilot studies; probe prospects for larger projects and/or applications for external funding; or have a well-delimited scientific output such as an interdisciplinary article.
s
Interdisciplinary data acquisition:
The interdisciplinary data acquisition projects can include the use of external research services to acquire or compile new datasets or assign person-months for existing or otherwise recruited personnel to compile new materials/data leading to a publication or acting as a catalyst for larger cooperation or application for external funding.
d
Mobility:
Applicable research visits may comprise research periods abroad for TAU researchers; or research periods for incoming external scholars invited or hosted by a TAU research group. Research visits may be for purposes of fieldwork, laboratory work or other experimentation, networking, co-authorship or planning of larger projects. Any applicants for this funding category must, at minimum, hold a master’s degree.
d
Evaluation criteria:
in all cases, applications should fall in the theme areas and aims of the CNESS and comprise interdisciplinary work. Proposed projects should address one or more of the following priorities: (i) aim for ambitious scientific articles/books; (ii) develop applications for external funding; (iii) include significant new cooperation; while (iv) they can also include a stakeholder or dissemination angle. In cases of otherwise equally high-scoring projects, priority is to be given for proposals involving new teams/combinations, and/or teams supporting diversity and emerging scholars. All projects should be conducted at TAU but can involve cooperation with TAMK or external partners. Proposals should not be one-person projects; cannot be limited to an individual thesis project; and must involve senior scholars. Seed-in and interdisciplinary data projects should involve more than one TAU research group. All funds should, as a rule, be used by the end of 2023.
d
Scope of funding:
we seek to fund several projects of the size of approximately 3,000-25,000€, with the overall sum committed in this round some 100,000€. The applicable expenses can, depending on the purpose, include salaried person-months, travel expenses, including daily allowances and acquisition of services or research material. For seed-in and data acquisition projects, applicants must have a doctorate. All applicants must be TAU employees. Projects can include TAMK involvement.
d
Application:
free-format applications of 1-2pp should be sent to CNESS coordinator carl.muth(at)tuni.fi, by Thursday, 3.8.2022, at 16:15, in one document. Please provide a brief overview of the aims, timing and involved personnel of the project and state how it serves the above-mentioned criteria, as well as provide a preliminary budget breakdown into (i) salaries (incl. 20% personnel costs overhead), (ii) travel; (iii) services. Decisions will be made in early August 2023.
