Urban wastewater reveals the scale of the coronavirus outbreak

Researchers at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) and Tampere University are analysing municipal wastewater to monitor the incidence of the coronavirus. Tracking wastewater for the virus provides almost real-time data about the spread of the epidemic in cities across Finland. Researchers at Tampere University contribute their scientific expertise to the study: the University has a long history of employing molecular methods in the study of pathogens, especially viruses.
