Our social protection and health portfolio includes projects on the provision of cash transfers and in-kind provision of equipment for key vulnerable populations.

1. Coordinating health and social services for tuberculosis patients in Mozambique

PI: A/prof Salla Atkins

Partners: Karolinska Institutet, University of Tampere, Instituto Nacional de Saude, Mozambique, University of Liverpool, UK

Funding period: 2018-2021

Funder: Swedish research council

This project will develop, implement and evaluate a bi-directional referral project between health and social services in Mozambique.

2. Social protection for patients with drug resistant TB in South Africa

PI: Dr Wanga Zembe-Mkabile, A/prof Salla Atkins

Partners: University of Tampere, Karolinska Institutet, Medical Research Council of South Africa

Funding period: 2017-2018

Funder: Medical Research Council of South Africa

This project is a qualitative exploration of drug resistant TB patients’ access to existing government social protection in South Africa. This project is one of many for which funding is being applied for. The funding proposals focus on availing disability grants to patients with tuberculosis.

3. Maternity package as part of MCH care globally

PI: Dr Annariina Koivu

This project will map maternity package (aka “baby box”) projects and programmes around the world to understand  how they are used to support expectant mothers and their babies to promote their health and wellbeing.

4. Maternity packages for increasing child registration in Namibia

PI: Dr Annariina Koivu

Partners: Institute of Health and Welfare, Finland + local partners.

This project will develop a system using maternity packages as an incentive for increasing child registration.

5.  Social protection for informal workers in LMICs

PI: Dr Mikko Perkiö

Partners: University of Tampere, University of Zambia and EU-SPS

Funder: CIMO and Erasmus +

This project will systematically study social protection policies for informal workers in LMICs (Doctoral candidate Jairous Miti).
