I am inviting submissions for a Royal Geographical Society’s Annual conference 2025 in the University of Birmingham (https://www.rgs.org/research/annual-international-conference) to explore creative thinking in carceral geography, focusing on new methods, concepts, and theoretical innovations that expand our understanding of carceral spaces, practices, and systems. Carceral geography, with its origins on prisons and spaces of confinement, has evolved to include the broader social, spatial, and political implications of carceralities in people’s everyday lives. This session aims to push the boundaries further by engaging with creative ideas, interdisciplinary approaches, and innovative methodologies.
Possible themes include but are not limited to:
- New methodologies: Exploring creative, experimental, or non-traditional methods for researching carceral spaces. How can we identify carceralities through innovative techniques? How can we develop novel approaches to capturing the experiences of the carceral?
- Conceptual and theoretical innovations: New theoretical and conceptual innovations in carceral geography are essential for advancing the field and addressing the evolving nature of the carceral. Thus, we encourage to propose novel theoretical thoughts or concepts that rethink carceral spaces and carceralities in society.
Submission Details:
Contributions from scholars, activists and artists engaged in creative or carceral studies are welcomed. The goal is to foster new thinking that challenges the boundaries of the field and stimulates cross-disciplinary dialogue.
Abstract Submission: Please submit a maximum 300-word abstract by Friday 21 February 2025, to virve.repo@tuni.fi
Looking forward to your creative contributions!
