OSCG Group Represented at the International M12 Meeting in Switzerland

meeting INSIGHT

Sikri Karhukorpi represented our group in M12 meeting which was held in St. Gallen, Switzerland, in January 13–16, 2025. The event brought together top researchers and industry professionals to discuss sustainable materials and chemicals as part of the PINK, INSIGHT, and CHIASMA projects.

INSIGHT (Integrated Models for the Development and Assessment of High Impact Chemicals and Materials) is an EU Horizon-funded project that develops models to assess the sustainability of chemicals and materials by combining new methods and data sources. The project consortium is led by Professor Dario Greco from Tampere University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology. The sub-project conducted by Industrial Engineering and Management unit (OSCG and CITER groups) focuses on measuring the social and economic impacts of selected technologies. The project runs from 2024 to 2027.

The PINK project aims to standardize material development and make sure research results follow FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). The CHIASMA project brings together a global team to develop new methods for evaluating the safety and sustainability of materials, using both experimental and computational approaches.

Highlights of the M12 Meeting

The M12 meeting provided a great opportunity for collaboration. During the INSIGHT project sessions, case studies were presented, and the sustainability impacts of various technologies were discussed. Tampere University researchers also presented their work on assessing the social impacts of graphene oxide production and use. Several top European research institutes and partner companies, leaders in the field, attended the meeting.

On Tuesday, January 14, 2025, PINK project partners participated in workshops. They focused on customizing the PINK matrix of methods for different levels of material development. An open session was held to discuss the FAIR documentation of PINK research results. In the afternoon, all projects took part in the FAIRification Workshop, which worked on improving the consistency and usability of research data. The evening ended with a dinner, providing a chance for informal networking.

Wednesday, January 15, 2025, was dedicated to the INSIGHT project. In the morning, separate sessions were held to discuss case studies on PFAS compounds, graphene oxide, and silica. Topics covered included data collection, modeling, and planning. After lunch, the focus shifted to improving INSIGHT visualizations, planning stakeholder communication, and working on manuscripts. The day finished with an open discussion on topics such as INSIGHT’s website content and upcoming events. In the evening, the mayor hosted a reception at St. Gallen City Hall, where Tampere University’s work was highlighted for international partners.

Tampere University’s Role

Tampere University plays an important role in the INSIGHT project, strengthening its position as a leader in sustainability research and its impact within the international research community. The M12 meeting helped to build collaboration in sustainable material research and set the stage for future innovations.
