Social Support After Prison: The Role of Families and Others

The growth in incarceration in the US has resulted in not only more individuals imprisoned, but also more individuals reentering communities and reintegrating with families after incarceration. Interest in how to best support successful reentry has intensified. One specific understudied area is the role that social support from family, friends, and others plays in an inmates’ eventual success when returning to their communities. Associate professor Jean Kjellstrand will present findings from her recent US qualitative study exploring the type, use,
and perceptions of social support from individuals recently released from prison. Such information is critical in the development of targeted prevention and intervention programs to support incarcerated individuals, their children, and their families.
Dr. Kjellstrand’s research and teaching interests focus on positive youth development and interventions to prevent problematic behavior among children in vulnerable situations. Her most recent research examines 1) the impact of parental incarceration on children and the specific mechanisms through which risk is transmitted, and 2) interventions to support incarcerated parents and their children both during the parents’ incarceration and after release.
