Who are you and what do you do?
I am Päivi Honkatukia, a professor of youth studies.
What are you currently researching?
I research ongoing global upheavals and crises, youth policy, changes in working life, sexual consent and other social phenomena from the perspective of young people. I am interested in young people’s experiences and thoughts on these societal issues, which are easily left aside in social discussions.
What is current right now?
In the Under Pressure research project we investigate the ongoing and alarming discussion on young people’s mental health crisis. We have prepared ourselves for extensive field work in the Autumn. Our idea is to study together with young people the structural causes of the current situation and come up with solutions at the political level. We aim to talk to 100-150 young people and use creative and art-based methods. The underpinning idea behind this endeavor is the following: by taking young people seriously as social actors we advance the democratic development of society as well as the well-being of young people, society and the entire ecosystem.
