The Academy of Finland changed practices in submitting a data management plan

The Academy of Finland has made some changes for the way how a data management plan (DMP) is submitted. Appended DMP is no longer needed when funding is applied. However, an explanation of how data management will be arranged during the project needs to be described in a research plan.

The Academy of Finland is strongly committed to promote open science and also expect that research data must be made freely available if possible.  Thus, the questions about data management are a natural part of application’s section (4.3.) where open science issues are discussed. The questions cover the following aspects: data storage during the project, legal and ethical issues related to the data distribution and availability of the data after the end of the project.

In the Tuuli network meeting (15.6.2020), senior science adviser Aki Salo from the Academy of Finland encouraged to give compact answers to data management questions: “Of course you can give long answers but it is eating space from everything else. You can say something short for each three questions when 10-15 lines may be quite enough.”

The lucky ones, who get funding for their project, must submit an actual data management plan within eight weeks from the funding decision. The payment of the funding is conditional on the submission of the plan. Therefore, funding recipients will create DMP in the spring or in the early summer in 2021. It makes sense to be an early bird and start working with DMP immediately after a funding decision in order to avoid last minute panic. DMP is a living document and it is worth updating during a research project.
