The aim of the subject matter didactics research group (SMD) is to bring together scholars interested in the study of teaching and learning both in a single school subject and in integrated projects with several subjects. The teaching and learning contexts of interest cover all school levels from preschool to upper secondary school as well as teacher education and other higher education contexts. The scholarship produced by the SMD research group has an important role not only in teacher education courses but also in other branches of education.
The research group members’ interests include teachers’ disciplines, teaching and evaluation methods, curricula and pupils’ perceptions and experiences with subjects.
– Recent studies are divided into four thematic areas: Language and Literature Education, STEM (Science, Technology, Arts, Mathematics), Art and Physics Education and Teaching of Academic Subjects in Higher Education. Each thematic area has several on-going projects.
– Teaching methods, the languaging approach and students’ metacognitive processes have been of a shared interest since the founding of the research group. Research projects associated with languaging have yielded publications mainly in connection with mathematics education and language and literature education.
