Focus areas

Our research focuses on the following topics in vulnerable periods of human life. You can find more information on our current research projects on the pages of our research groups.

Investigating short- and long-term implications of the course of pregnancy for maternal health

We explore how healthy and complicated pregnancy courses shape maternal health in the short and long term. Our work focuses on mechanisms and outcomes to improve care and prevent complications.

We study cardiometabolic conditions such as maternal obesity, gestational diabetes, and hypertensive disorders to understand their role in pregnancy complications and long-term cardiovascular risk. We also examine outcomes in women with rare diseases and design interventions to support maternal health during and after pregnancy.

Exploring Early Life Factors to Understand and Prevent Childhood Obesity

We focus on understanding how maternal health and early-life experiences shape children’s long-term health and well-being. Our research identifies risk and protective factors for obesity and related cardiometabolic conditions, for example examining the role of dietary patterns and other lifestyle factors such as physical activity.

In addition, we develop and evaluate prenatal and early childhood interventions to promote healthy growth and prevent obesity and cardiometabolic diseases in children.

Research on Prevention and Treatment of Childhood Diseases

We study the biological mechanisms behind childhood diseases and explore ways to prevent and treat them. We are committed to improving the quality of care, not only by developing innovative therapies and vaccines, but also by assessing and advancing current treatment practices. Our work includes testing advanced immunological approaches and nutritional interventions.

We also investigate strategies for early detection of autoimmune diseases and methods for primary and secondary prevention. In addition, we examine allergic sensitization and its links to other atopic conditions, as well as environmental factors like early diet that influence the development of asthma and allergies.

Study of Mental Health, Identity and Well-being in Childhood and Adolescence

We explore mental health, identity formation and overall well-being among children and adolescents in today’s society. Our research aims to understand challenges and develop solutions that promote healthy development.

We develop and test new technologies and innovative approaches for recognizing, treating and preventing mental health conditions. Our work also examines the biological, psychological, cultural and social foundations of gender dysphoria in young people. In addition, we study body image and the stigma associated with overweight and obesity, as well as the impact these factors have on self-esteem and health.

We aim to advance maternal, child, and youth health through research that supports high-quality care, preventive strategies, and innovative interventions across the life course.
