The Graduate School in Industrial Wood Construction is an interdisciplinary working platform inside the faculty of the built environment where our dissertation researchers produce new information for the field.

Our strategy

The graduate school creates new research knowledge that companies and public sector organizations can use to develop industrial wood construction. We conduct both experimental and theoretical research in three areas: civil engineering, architecture and construction economy.

Uuden täydennyskoulutuksen järjestävät Novian johdolla Wood Construction Academy Finland* – Puurakentamisen korkeakouluverkoston jäsenistä Yrkeshögskolan Novia, Tampereen ammattikorkeakoulu TAMK, Tampereen yliopisto (TAU) ja osittain kurssien toteutukseen liittyen TTS Työtehoseura.

Open Data: Revolutionizing Timber Engineering Research

Developing calculation methods for existing and especially for innovative structures like the Nordic system is challenging. The biggest hurdle?  Access to reliable test data for comparison with analytical and Finite element models (FEM). Although, FEM is nowadays considered to provide accurate values this accuracy depends on the material models, boundary conditions, connections etc... The list of decisions that the designer makes while building the FEM model is almost endless.

Amerikan blogi 1/4: suomalaiselle puurakennusosaamiselle on kysyntää Yhdysvalloissa

Teollisen puurakentamisen tutkijakoulu vieraili lokakuussa Yhdysvalloissa Alabaman osavaltiossa Auburnin yliopistossa järjestetyssä Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) -konferenssissa ja Michigan State yliopistossa. Vierailun aikana tutkijat kokivat eteläistä vieraanvaraisuutta Alexander Cityn vieraina, sekä tiivistivät suhteita yhdysvaltalaisiin tutkijoihin ja yrityksiin ja oppivat paljon metsäteollisuuden ja puurakentamisen tilasta rapakon takana. Tämä kirjoitus aloittaa neliosaisen blogisarjan, jossa käsitellään puurakentamisen nykytilaa, Suomi-Yhdysvallat-suhteita ja tulevaa tutkimushanketta.

Published research: “Finnish mid-rise timber apartment buildings: Architectural, structural, and constructional features”

The construction of timber apartment buildings has been particularly common in mid-rise buildings, which are 3 to 8 stories high. This recent study that examined 55 constructed timber apartment buildings provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of timber construction in Finland. The study focused on the architectural and structural solutions used in Finland between 2018 and 2022 under the Land Use and Building Act, which came into effect on January 1, 2018. Special attention was given to the structural systems, construction methods, structural timber materials, and structure thicknesses used.
