Nordic Innovative Trial to Evaluate osteoPorotic fractures

NITEP research group (Nordic Innovative Trial to Evaluate osteoPorotic fractures) has studied the treatment and prevalence of upper extremity fractures since 2009. The group has received Academy of Finland Project Funding twice (Minna Laitinen, 2013, and Ville Mattila, 2018). This Tampere driven research collaboration brings together centres from Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Estonia. At present we are conducting randomized clinical trials on proximal humerus fractures and wrist fractures.

Effect of COVID-19 pandemic on emergency care and surgery

The collaborative multicentre study seeks to examine the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic and the related societal restrictions and healthcare preparedness measures on emergency care demand and on surgical procedures in Finnish population.

Polytrauma research

The research seeks to investigate the prognosis, quality of life, return to work, and treatment costs of severely injured patients treated at intensive care units. Some of the research data is collected from the Tampere University Hospital Trauma Registry, founded in 2015. The polytrauma research is carried out in collaboration with both domestic partners (e.g. Central Finland Central Hospital, Mikkeli Central Hospital, Kuopio University Hospital) as well as foreign ones (e.g. German TR-DGU registry collaboration).

Translation and implementation of research evidence into practice

The purpose of this international collaboration project is to track changes in the operative treatment of common musculoskeletal disorders and conditions. We are interested in how new high-quality randomized clinical trials change treatment practices used by orthopaedists. We have two partners from Sweden, Karolinska Institutet and Socialstyrelsen (the National Board of Health and Welfare).

ReWOrth – Reproducibility and Value Within Orthopaedics and Traumatology Research

The purpose of the ReWOrth research group is to conduct meta-research (”research on research”) within orthopaedics and strive to highlight methodological issues relevant to reproducibility in orthopaedics. Moreover, the research group seeks to determine how orthopaedic research creates value for patients and healthcare.

Patellar dislocation research

The purpose of this research project is to determine the optimal treatment for primary traumatic patellar dislocation, and, on the other hand, to investigate the incidence of articular cartilage damage and its effect on the prognosis.

Research on osteotomy of the foot

This research project compares the osteotomy fixation capacity of a novel bioabsorbable screw to that of a titanium screw in foot surgery. Also, the reliability of bioabsorbable pins in Chevron osteotomy is evaluated. Furthermore, we examine the removal rates of metal screws and plates used in ankle surgery.

This national multicentre study investigating the treatment of midfoot fracture (Lisfranc injury) compares operative and conservative treatment in CT scan confirmed Lisfranc injuries.

Collaboration projects

POSITIF (Prosthesis versus Osteosynthesis in Treatment of Intra-articular Fractures of Proximal Tibia) RCT

The purpose of the randomized multicentre trial is to assess which is the better treatment option for intra-articular fractures of proximal tibia in patients over 65 years of age, a knee replacement or osteosynthesis with a locking plate. The trial is led by Professor Juha Paloneva of Central Finland Central Hospital. Tampere University Hospital and Coxa Hospital for Joint Replacement participate as one of the centres in the study. The study is also joined by Oulu University Hospital.
