Aki Kaurismäki’s film The Man Without a Past (2002) is a drama-comedy taking place in Helsinki, especially around the city’s harbor area. The film is preceded by a half-hour introductory lecture by Martti Kaartinen on the topic of the sociometabolic profile of the modern city and its significance for people’s normative relationship to the city. The lecture examines the structure of an energy-intensive city from the perspectives of urban narrative and technological actors, and how this structure manifests itself in the contemporary city. The film is followed by an open discussion.

About the lecturer: Martti Kaartinen is a PhD candidate in the School of Architecture at the Faculty of Built Environment, Tampere University. In his research, he is interested in the ontological relationship between humans and technology, which provides a framework for the study of infrastructures and urban space from new materialist perspectives. He also examines the effects of urban space on everyday life, routines, and social metabolism through a sociological lens. As a filmmaker, he explores the connection between technological development and cultural change.
