Knitting for Climate – Research Talks

TURNS Knitting for Climate Research Talks continues the series of public research discussions. The aim is to get together in some public or semi-public space, give informal research talks and discuss together the issues around sustainable cities and planetary well-being. This time, we do this in a sewing circle known as the Knitting for Climate.
If you would like to present your own research on urban sustainability (and especially if you know how to knit and talk at the same time!), you can book a 10 minutes slot for a talk in advance. Note that there will be no presentation equipment available. We will publish the names and titles of the confirmed speakers (max. 3-4) on this website as we receive registrations.
TURNS can provide some materials for knitting, but if possible, please bring your own knitting needles (size 4-6) and/or red yarn if you some some extra at home. You can also work on your own knitting project during the event so it does not have to be a Knitting for Climate scarf.
You can sign up for the TURNS Knitting for Climate event for possible updates, reserve knitting needles and/or yarn, or propose your own research talk for the event by filling in this form by 7 October 2026: REGISTRATION. Note that we accept only 3-4 research talks per event to have enough time for discussion, but you can still propose a talk, so we may organize a new event on some other occasion.

What is Knitting for Climate?
Knitting for Climate is a social movement of people using the art of knitting to express their concern over climate change and the inadequate political response to it.
The idea is to knit a red scarf with the measurements of 15 cm X 1,5 m. You can keep the scarf to yourself, give it to someone as a present, put it on a public statue, or – as the original idea is – send it to a politician.
Knitting for Climate can be done anywhere, at home, public spaces, cafes, libraries, lecture halls, online meetings… It is a sign that we care for the climate and our planet.

How to arrive to Nekalab?
Nekalab is located in Nekala, approximately three kilometers from the centre of Tampere, at Lounaantie 2, 33800 Tampere. Bus number 14 stops next to the building. Bus number 10 stops at Lampipuisto, from where Nekalab is within walking distance. Bicycle parking and limited car parking is available in the area. We recommend using public transport whenever possible. Nekalab is accessible via the restaurant entrance (Door B, courtyard).
