Visual Studies Lab -book club on expanded photographies continues this spring with two meetings, and the first meeting is online April 5th from 13.15-14.45.
The book discussed for the first session is Looking Through Images. A Phenomenology of Visual Media (Columbia UP 2021) by Emmanuel Alloa, who will also be one of the keynotes for Helsinki Photomedia 2024 (11-13th of April) – a photography research conference co-organized by Visual Studies Lab.
In Looking Through Images, Alloa retraces the history of Western attitudes toward the visual to propose a major rethinking of images as irreplaceable agents of our everyday engagement with the world. He examines how ideas of images and their powers have been constructed in Western humanities, art theory, and philosophy, developing a novel genealogy of both visual studies and the concept of the medium.
