Where are you working in your summer position?
“I got an internship for the summer in National Bureau of Investigation (Keskusrikospoliisi) in assisting tasks in the forensics”, Anna-Mari replied.
Keskusrikospoliisi investigates organized crime and other major criminal activity. It leads the development of investigation techniques in Finland, and employs a large number of STEM professionals, such as forensic chemists.

Valtiolle.fi is a job search service of the Finnish government, an application channel for open jobs and internships offered by municipalities, cities, wellbeing services counties, or any other government-funded organizations.

Can you tell us about your previous study and work background, and how it helped you to get the new job?
“I am a master’s student in Biomedical Engineering (Tech.). My previous work experience includes a position as a research assistant here at Tampere University in NeuroGroup. That experience taught me valuable skills, such as organisational skills, working under pressure, and taking initiative, which definitely helped me get the job.
What was the application process like?
“The application form included a few open questions about key qualities required for the role. I had an interview on Teams and was informed the following week that I got the position. The process was very quick and straightforward.”
Do you have any tips for biotechnology students for getting a job on their own field?
“Be open-minded and apply for all relevant positions – even if you’re unsure about your qualifications. Be confident about your skills and don’t stress too much. The situation on the job markets is tough, so don’t get discouraged by rejections.”
Traditionally, internship positions in biotechnology and biomedical engineering are found in universities or biotech companies, but the need for our expertise is found in surprisingly many corners of the job market. As Anna-Mari said – be open minded, and apply!
