HET group implements research and development projects with national and international partners. HET researchers engage actively in the scientific discussion on higher education research by participating in national and international networks and conferences. The group also organises thematic seminars and public lectures in Tampere University.


HET Forum events

Nov 2022 – Apr 2023, Tampere University & online

HET research group organised a series of conversational events that aim to enable interaction between researchers in the field of higher education research at the Faculty of Education and Culture, Tampere University. HET Forums focus on different higher education related topics: (1) ‘Publishing process from the perspective of editors’, (2) ‘Demystifying internationalisation in higher education’, and (3): ‘Which hat to wear? Seminar ‘Challenges in Higher Education Under Siege’

25 November 2022, Tampere University & online

HET research group organised a seminar focusing on Palestinian higher education. Two keynote speakers, Associate Professor Nazmi Al-Masri (The Islamic University of Gaza, Palestine) and Postdoc Researcher Tahani Al Dahdouh (Tampere University) presented recent development trends in the challenging context of Palestinian higher education including the post-pandemic online teaching practices. The seminar was a part of Prof Al-Masri’s visit to the Faculty of Education and Culture through the Erasmus mobility cooperation between Tampere University and the Islamic University of Gaza. Seminar ‘Careers in Higher Education (Research)’

17 June 2022, Tampere University

HET researchers, Vesna Holubek, Vesa Korhonen, and Johanna Annala, organised a seminar in cooperation with the Network of Finland-based early-career higher education researchers, Higher Education Group HEG (Tampere University) and the Consortium of Higher Education Researchers in Finland CHERIF. The one-day seminar included two presentations and two parallel sessions that focused on different aspects of being an early-career researcher in the field of higher education. Seminar ‘Common challenges in PhD research’

12 May 2022, online

HET researchers, Vesna Holubek, Vesa Korhonen, and Johanna Annala, organised a joint online doctoral seminar with the Centre for Higher Education Research and Evaluation (CHERE) at Lancaster University. The seminar was arranged as a knowledge exchange event about challenges that doctoral researchers commonly encounter. More information: blog post about the seminar

Reflection Facilitator (2020-2023)

A combination of a research project and pedagogical development activities, Reflection Facilitator is a research-based digital tool for facilitating deeper levels of reflection thus supporting learning goals in higher education. The Reflection Facilitator has been developed as a part of the pilot project OPTIMO and implemented in the context of study courses, personnel development and career guidance services. HET researchers, Kaisu Mälkki, Marita Mäkinen and Anne Jyrkiäinen, have been involved with Reflection Facilitator and OPTIMO project. International symposium ‘Perspectives on excellence in teaching and learning in higher education’

3 March 2020, Islamic University of Gaza

In cooperation with their project partners in Islamic University of Gaza, HET researchers organised a second international symposium as a part of the eTraining FinPal project. The symposium focused on different perspectives on excellence in teaching and learning in higher education. Vesa Korhonen, Jyri Lindén, Pauliina Alenius, Tahani Fourah and Vesna Holubek joined the symposium via online-conference connection together with the keynote speaker Paul Ashwin (Lancaster University). Open lecture series ‘Insights into learning and teaching in transforming contexts of higher education’

August – November 2019, Tampere University

HET researchers, Johanna Annala, Vesa Korhonen, Jyri Lindén and Vesna Holubek, organised an open lecture series in cooperation with the Team of University Pedagogy at the Faculty of Education and Culture, Tampere University. The lecture series addressed topical issues in university communities such as student learning gain, curriculum and internationalisation in higher education. The events included open lectures given by three international scholars, Camille Kandiko Howson (Imperial College London), Paul Ashwin (Lancaster University) and Sue Robson (Newcastle University). The lectures were funded by the Ällästikku Teaching Award 2018 granted to teachers and researchers in university pedagogy for successful implementation of the research-teaching nexus in universities’ pedagogical activities. International symposium ‘New Teaching Approaches in Higher Education’

19 March 2019, Islamic University of Gaza

In cooperation with their project partners in Islamic University of Gaza, HET researchers organised an international symposium as a part of the eTraining FinPal project. The symposium was supported by the Academic Excellence Unit and Quality and Development Deanship at Islamic University of Gaza. Vesa Korhonen, Jyri Lindén and Pauliina Alenius, HET researchers, participated in an online panel discussion with Camilla Østerberg Rump, Associate professor at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. Thematic workshop on higher education research in FERA Conference on Education

15-16 November 2018, University of Tampere

HET researchers organised a thematic workshop entitled ‘Research on Higher Education and Students in Higher Education’ (Korkeakoulutuksen ja korkeakouluopiskelun tutkimus) during the 39th Finnish national conference on education (Kansalliset kasvatustieteen päivät). The workshop included 22 presentations related to research on higher education. The sessions were chaired by Vesa Korhonen, Vesna Holubek, Susanna Mikkonen and Johanna Annala. eTraining FinPal (2017-2020)

In cooperation with Islamic University of Gaza, Palestinian Territories, eTraining FinPal is a research and development project funded by the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs (HEI ICI programme). Seminar ‘Emerging trends in higher education research’

26-27 November 2015, University of Tampere

HET group organised an open seminar for researchers focusing on higher education topics. The keynote speaker of the seminar, Dr Kelly Coate (Director of the King’s Learning Institute, King’s College London, UK) spoke about emerging trends in higher education research.
