Research interests

My main research interests include families in different perspectives: e.g. families with children, families as clients in health care and families in challenging life situations. Since 1994, my largest research projects have concerned family violence: child maltreatment, identifying and intervening in family violence, family risks, from the intervention and outcome research perspective. The last one on the list is the topic on which I focus during my Research Collegium period, during which I also work with my research group in the Southern Osthrobothnia Hospital District (Etelä-Pohjanmaan sairaanhoitopiiri), e.g. in our intervention research project concerning family violence from the primary and special health care perspective (140/THL/TE/2011). This project started already in the year 2008, and we have developed both education for staff and practice guidelines as interventions. We are going to measure the outcomes of those in the next phase of the research project. I am also interested in developing evidence- based practices, e.g. as a member of the Review Panel of Systematic Reviews at the Finnish Centre for Evidence Based Health Care, an affiliated centre of the Joanna Briggs Institute (www.hotus.fi). Also the National Nursing Guideline by our research group concerning child maltreatment issues can be found on those web pages in both Finnish and English.

The University of Tampere also arranged, together with many collaborators, the 12th European Regional Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect in Tampere on 19–21 September 2011 (www.uta.fi/conference/childabuseandneglect2011).
