Background and areas of expertise

Aaron Goings’s areas of expertise include 20th century United States history, American social and labor history, and immigration history. He earned his Ph.D. from Simon Fraser University in 2011.

Dr. Goings is currently Senior Researcher at the Institute of Advanced Social Research at the University of Tampere, and Associate Professor of History at Saint Martin’s University. His first book, (co-authored with Gary Kaunonen) Community in Conflict: A Working-Class History of the 1913-14 Michigan Copper Strike and the Italian Hall Tragedy, (Michigan State University Press, 2013) won the 2013 Outstanding History Publication from the Michigan Historical Association.

During the 2014-2015 academic year, Dr. Goings worked as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland.

He is currently working on several book-length manuscripts on the history of the Pacific Northwest, including one entitled “Red Towns and Red Woods: Workers, Community, and Class Mobilizations in Grays Harbor, Washington.
