30.11.2026 Bringing Intersectionality into Your Research Design - Interactive Workshop for Doctoral Researchers

📅 30. November 2026, 11:00-14:00
📍 Tampere University, Linna Building, room 5014

How can an intersectional perspective strengthen your research design? How might questions of race, gender, sexuality, and other intersecting social positions be meaningfully acknowledged and incorporated into your doctoral research?

This workshop offers doctoral researchers an opportunity to critically reflect on their research design through an intersectional lens. The event is intended as a low-threshold, supportive space for discussion and exploration. You do not need to have previously incorporated intersectionality into your research. Instead, the workshop is designed for anyone interested in considering whether and how an intersectional approach could be integrated into their doctoral project. The event welcomes doctoral researchers from all faculties.

Three senior researchers with expertise in intersectional research will act as discussants, providing feedback and facilitating conversation among participants. Senior researchers are Anna Rastas, Iida Pöllänen and Joseph Jukes whose expertise encompasses race, gender, and queer studies.

To support the discussion, participants are asked to submit a maximum one-page paper including:

  • Working title of the doctoral project
  • Research question(s)
  • Information about the research design, including:
    • Discipline(s) and research field(s)
    • Data and materials
    • Methods and/or theoretical framework
  • A brief reflection on whether and how you have considered incorporating an intersectional perspective into your research design
  • Any specific questions, challenges, or areas where you would appreciate guidance regarding the use of an intersectional approach

The workshop is limited to 10 participants to allow for in-depth discussion and individualized feedback.
