We are organizing the following courses in photonics.
FYS.514 Optical design
This course provides an introduction to basics, analysis and design of optical systems.Analysis is mainly based on geometrical optics but the effects of wave nature of light are taken into account. Basic parameters imaging systems will be reviewed. Diffraction, resolution and aberration of optical systems as well as performance metrics will be introduced. Design and analysis program Ansys Zemax OpticStudio will be often used in exercises. Some exercises benefit of using Matlab or Python for numerical calculations.
In collaboration with University of Eastern Finland and PREIN.
FYS.510 Optical Thin Films and Waveguides
This course provides an introduction to: 1) Optical characteristics of thin-films, and 2) waveguides and their applications in integrated optics. We shall formulate a transfer-matrix method and use it extensivelly to analyze layers and other photonic structures needed in various applications. Our emphasis is on thin films applied as mirrors, filters and waveguides. Numerical methods for waveguide analysis and design are introduced.
